BCCI 2024 AIW #8

This Buck 112 brass bolster drop point, has the Buck Knives BCCI engraving on the back of the ricasso and the knife is signed by the artist on the back of the rocker arm.  You have to look inside the blade well to find my well hid signature.  The cost of this knife is $460. as it is mostly gem silica Chrysocolla.

Vulture Mountain Chrysocolla in Quartz – “Alien Ice World” seam –

I'm sad to announce that Rodney Frisby, the sole miner of this very rare stone, has passed away as the result of a 4-wheeler overturn accident in October 2023, while out mining.

This knife has scales cut from beautiful slabs of Chrysocolla in Quartz from the Vulture Mountain find of Rodney Frisby, in Arizona.  This was Rodney’s find about 50 miles north of the original Bisbee copper mine.   This stone has beautiful blue mixes of Chrysocolla, Malachite, and Ajoite in white Quartz that I call the “Alien Ice World” stone.

It is highly silicated (Quartz) in most areas with the light turquoise blue Ajoite and Chrysocolla being mostly replaced by Quartz.  This is an incredibly durable stone as I do my rough scale shaping with a 60 grit wheel.

Other colors are often mixed in:

The green in the stone is Malachite.

The Black is Chalcocite.

The pale green is Ajoite.

Deep blue is Azurite.

The brown and brilliant ruby red in the stone is Cuprite.  The luster can be sub-metallic to a brilliant adamantine luster.  ( Adamantine luster, non-metallic, brilliant light reflecting & transmitting properties of minerals.) It is also known as ruby copper due to its distinctive red color.  It is a secondary mineral which forms in the oxidized zone of copper sulfide deposits. It frequently occurs in association with native copper, ajoite, chrysocolla, malachite, azurite and shattuckite.

Most of the original copper minerals in this stone has psuedomorphed to Quartz.   A pseudomorph is a mineral that has replaced another mineral atom by atom, but it often leaves the original mineral's color intact.
